Dirt 101

This is a beginner course on how to prepare and ride an adventure style or dual sport motorcycle off road in the Pineland's and other types of terrain. The class covers the fundamentals of riding on dirt, sand and gravel roads.

Starting with bike setup and ergonomics, we help you adjust the brake and clutch levers, handle bars, tire pressure, mirrors, turn signals, shield, after market lights and accessories. We have tools, but please bring tools that fit various nuts and bolts on your bike. You never know when you'll need them, and just in case we don’t have the right wrench. We don’t do a complete service on your bike. We just help by adjusting, or removing some things in case of falls.

After the machines are setup, we cover basic balance, cornering, acceleration, braking, sliding, hills and bumps, ruts, puddles and sand. Our instructors show you how each drill is done, then observe and instruct you on how to improve your skills. Individual coaching and attention helps build confidence and capability.

Knobby tires are recommended. If you don't have knobbies, expect to work twice as hard and fall a bit more depending on your experience.

A helmet, gloves and good pair of boots are required. They don’t have to be full racing / mx boots, but they need to be a hard boot with strong ankle support. Shin protection is also recommended if your boots don’t come up that high, knee protection is also a good idea. A "Pressure Suit" or Adventure Jacket completes the recommended gear for the school. We recommend this for everyday riding, not just this course. Always plan for a fall whether you are on street or dirt.

On the adventure ride after the class, we practice the basic skills learned in class and possibly cover more advanced riding tips depending on the terrain we encounter. The conditions in the forest change with the seasons and current weather, so you never know what we might come across, it's a real adventure.
